AED (Anti-Explosive Decompression) Seals & RGD Seals
What are AED Seals — and why they matter
In many high-pressure gas and oil applications, standard elastomer seals and O-rings are vulnerable to a phenomenon called Explosive Decompression (ED), also known as Rapid Gas Decompression (RGD). Gas can permeate into the seal material when exposed to high-pressure gaseous media. If the pressure suddenly drops, the trapped gas expands rapidly — often faster than the material can accommodate — causing violent internal expansion. The result: fissures, cracks or outright seal failure.
AED seals are purpose-designed to resist this failure mode. Rather than being an ordinary elastomer, they use specially engineered compounds and manufacturing processes to endure rapid decompression events without damage — making them essential where safety, reliability, and integrity are critical.
These seals are widely used in demanding environments such as oil and gas extraction, subsea operations, chemical processing, petrochemical plants, and other high-pressure gas or fluid systems.
Industry Standards & Guidance
Where AED / RGD certification is required, elastomer compounds are typically assessed against standards such as:
- NORSOK M-710 Rev. 2 (Section 7.3 Annex B) — qualification of non-metallic sealing materials for rapid gas decompression resistance.
- TOTAL GS PVV 142, Appendix 8 — testing procedure for explosion decompression resistant O-rings.
- NACE TM0297 — assesses effects of high temperature, high pressure CO2 decompression on elastomeric materials.
- ISO 23936-2 — specification for elastomers used in contact with media typical for oil, gas and petrochemical production.
Eastern Seals (UK) Ltd can help source AED / RGD resistant materials and review available supplier documentation against your application requirements, including sour gas exposure such as H2S where relevant.
Any available approvals or test reports relate to the specific supplier compound or formulation stated on the documentation, not to every individual seal or batch.
AED Seal Materials & Available Formulations
We offer a comprehensive range of AED / RGD resistant elastomer compounds — across several base materials — to suit a broad variety of operating conditions. Each has been selected for unique advantages in temperature range, chemical exposure, and pressure environment.
Typical Applications & Use Cases
AED-rated seals are indispensable wherever high-pressure gas or fluid systems may undergo rapid depressurisation. Common use cases include:
- Oil and gas production systems — valves, compressors, pipelines, subsea equipment.
- Chemical processing plants and petrochemical facilities — where aggressive chemicals, solvents or sour gases (e.g. H2S, CO2) are handled.
- High-pressure valves, pumps, hydraulic systems — especially where frequent pressure cycles or abrupt depressurisation may occur.
- Any application where seal integrity is critical for safety, downtime risk is high, or failure could lead to environmental or safety hazards.
Choosing an AED-resistant seal material depends on several factors: expected pressures, depressurisation rates, ambient and operating temperatures, chemical/media compatibility, and whether the seal will be used in static or dynamic conditions.
Why Choose Eastern Seals for AED Solutions
- We supply a wide selection of AED / RGD resistant materials (HNBR, FKM/Viton® B or GLT, FFKM, AFLAS) to match the demands of a broad range of industries — from oil & gas to chemical, petrochemical and beyond.

- We provide full traceability: each product is marked with part numbers, batch numbers and cure dates (in text and barcode format if needed).
- A robust stock, comprehensive size range and expert technical support are available — so whether you need standard O-rings or custom seals, we can help.
Choosing the Right AED Seal — Key Considerations
When specifying AED seals, it’s important to evaluate the following parameters to ensure long-term performance and safety:
- Pressure characteristics: both maximum working pressure and the rate of pressure drop (rapid decompression risk).
- Media type: gases and fluids (hydrocarbons, CO2, H2S, corrosive chemicals) — select material with appropriate chemical resistance.
- Temperature range: static and dynamic temperature exposure; need for low-temperature flexibility or high-temperature endurance.
- Mechanical conditions: whether the seal is static or dynamic, frequency of cycles, potential compression set — materials like FFKM or specialized FKM may perform better in aggressive/dynamic applications.
- Certification requirements: compliance with relevant industry standards (e.g. NORSOK M-710, NACE, ISO), particularly for oil & gas, petrochemical, or subsea operations.
Our experienced technical team at Eastern Seals is available to help guide your selection based on these factors — our aim is to ensure you get the most suitable material for your specific environment and application.
