Ethylene Propylene (EPDM)

EPDM, or ethylene-propylene-diene elastomer, is a robust and flexible sealing material used widely across industrial, automotive, plumbing, and environmental applications. Its versatility comes from strong resistance to chemicals, heat, weathering, and ageing.

EPDM is often selected where long-term sealing reliability is needed in water, steam, outdoor, and chemically demanding environments.

What is EP vs. EPDM

EP is an ethylene-propylene copolymer that delivers the core benefits of this elastomer family and is typically sulphur-cured.

EPDM includes a third monomer, a diene, which allows cross-linking and improves physical performance. EPDM can be sulphur-cured or peroxide-cured, with peroxide-cured grades generally offering better high-temperature stability and lower compression set.

Because the two materials are closely related, the terms EP and EPDM are sometimes used interchangeably, although curing method and long-term performance can differ significantly.

  • Wide temperature range — EPDM remains flexible over a broad operating window, typically from around -50°C up to +120°C, with some grades reaching lower temperatures and peroxide-cured compounds suitable for continuous service around +150°C.
  • Excellent weather, ozone, and UV resistance — Its saturated polymer backbone gives EPDM strong resistance to oxygen, ozone, sunlight, and environmental ageing, making it one of the best outdoor sealing materials.
  • Strong water, steam, and polar chemical resistance — EPDM performs well with water, hot water, steam, glycols, alcohols, many acids and alkalis, and certain hydraulic fluids such as phosphate-ester or glycol-based media.
  • Low compression set and good elasticity — It retains sealing force well over long-term compression and remains flexible at lower temperatures.
  • Good mechanical properties — Depending on grade, EPDM can deliver a strong balance of tensile strength, tear resistance, abrasion resistance, and elongation for gaskets, O-rings, hoses, and seals.
  • Electrical insulation — EPDM is also a good electrical insulator, which supports cable insulation and electrical sealing uses.
  • Regulatory-grade availability — Specialist EPDM grades can be formulated for potable water, sanitary, and food-contact applications including standards such as WRAS, NSF 61, FDA, USP Class VI, and 3A where required.

Because of this combination of properties, EPDM is widely used for:

  • Seals, O-rings, and gaskets in drinking water systems, plumbing installations, and domestic water appliances.
  • Automotive components such as coolant hoses, compatible brake-fluid seals, weather-stripping, and window or door seals where oil exposure is limited.
  • Outdoor and environmental sealing including roofing membranes, construction seals, glazing seals, and weather gaskets subject to UV, ozone, moisture, and temperature cycling.
  • Industrial applications involving water, steam, acids, alkalis, glycol-based fluids, and selected hydraulic systems such as HVAC, boilers, steam systems, and water-treatment equipment.
  • Electrical insulation and sealing such as cable jacketing, conduit seals, and related protective components.

EPDM is a balanced elastomer choice when you need strong resistance to weather, ozone, UV, water, steam, glycols, acids, alkalis, and many other polar chemicals, together with dependable sealing performance over a wide temperature range.

It is also a strong option when your application needs compliance-focused compounds for potable water, food, or hygienic service.

When selecting the right EPDM compound, grade and cure system matter:

  • Sulphur-cured EPDM — suitable for many general-purpose seals and gaskets.
  • Peroxide-cured EPDM — preferred for more demanding temperature, steam, chemical, or long-term compression duties because of better long-term stability.
